What does effective and fair AI regulation look like across industries such as healthcare, energy, fintech and transport?

Policymakers have reached a political agreement on Europe's AI Act, a landmark set of rules that will govern the fast-developing technology. It aims to require companies to be transparent when using chatbots, while curbing the use of high-risk applications such as predictive policing and emotional recognition.

Against the backdrop of fraught debate, rulemakers and industry have asked whether the best approach would be to work together. If the starting point is striking a balance between encouraging innovation and protecting people’s rights, it will be easier to adapt to future risks in a fast-changing market.

How can policymakers anticipate future innovations? What are citizen demands and fears? How can company leaders make technological advances safely and securely? Who will set the new standards, and is there room for flexibility as technology evolves?

Hosted by the Financial Times and Google, this invitation-only event gathered leading figures from across European institutions, industries, start-ups, NGOs, academics, trade associations and think tanks to chart a path forward that is innovative and fair.
